The Manana vs Dr. Anger

Patriarchal masculinity insists that real men must prove their manhood by idealizing aloneness and disconnection. Feminist masculinity tells men that they become more real through the act of connecting with others, through building community.

This project explores community, both local -- Jason’s Toronto neighbourhood along Dundas West and Sterling Road -- and a larger online community via the internet and social media.  With a nod to the current obsession with Marvel Universe, it tells a story about a superhero and villain, The Manana and Dr. Anger.  Jason plays both characters, referencing Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and targets our society’s views of masculinity through dance and musical history, performance, comic book and street art.
