Museum of the Unsettled

This collection of photographs began as a series of relief sculptures made with found objects, paint, magazine clippings and photos. The sculptures were photographed at different angles and the subsequent images digitally stitched together. The resulting pieces suggest a space between sculpture, painting and photography.

The title,“Museum of the Unsettled”, hints that these works are artefacts from the past. Within each piece there are images of objects, news events or characters from the time period of the artist’s childhood. The artist recontextualizes this past through a contemporary lens of settler/colonialist ideology that criticizes the ruling powers of the day -- Patriarchal, Christian, White. There is also a reference to the post-apocalyptic, as all these works are created from scraps of the past that suggest a dark future. Are the objects nostalgic, superstitious or shameful? Through presentation, are they talismans or a record of a time best forgotten?
